Nashville-based singer-songwriter Brennan Wedl (previously of Boston’s Dazey and The Scouts) signed to Kill Rock Stars this year and has released a few singles for the label, most recently this week’s “Fake Cowboy.” It starts as a contemplative folk track before turning up the dial on the rock and grunge, with insightful, narrative lyrics the whole way through. She calls it a “lovingly crafted exposé of East Nashville’s infamous Honky Tonk Tuesday. The AABA structured song is lush with true accounts of western wear, big talk and experiences so surreal, it made me call my mom.” Hear it below.

As Stereogum points out, Brennan has been getting some love from Snail Mail on Instagram lately, and Waxahatchee gave her a shoutout on her Substack, writing, “I feel inundated with very good new music (Beyonce, Jessica Pratt) but 2 artists have released things I can’t stop listening to. The first just put out a couple singles, both of which are great and one of which I simply cannot stop singing. Her name is Brennan Wedl and the song is ‘2 Dollar Pistol’ – have you heard it? Go listen to it if not. It’s catchy, it’s country, it’s 90s, it’s just so many things that I love & you know it’s just FUN. I’m loving it. Lindsey Jordan showed me her song ‘I Wanna Be Your TV’ a few months ago and I’ve been such a fan ever since. I can’t wait to hear the rest of what I assume is an album being rolled out.”

Brennan has some shows with Dirt Buyer lined up starting on Monday (3/18), starting in Nashville and wrapping up in NYC (Baby’s All Right on March 31, which is also with People I Love). See all dates below.
