No Doubt returned for their first set since 2015’s Washington DC Global Citizen Earth Day Concert at weekend one of Coachella on Saturday (4/13), where they played right before the night’s headliner, Tyler, The Creator, on the Coachella stage. Olivia Rodrigo made a surprise appearance during “Bathwater,” a song she previously chose as one of her top 18 songs in 2021 for her 18th birthday. From Billboard:

Rodrigo — wearing a cropped white tank top that read “I [heart] ND” — popped up on the Coachella Stage for a surprise duet on the Return of Saturn single, trading verses and sharing the chorus with Stefani. The two were playful throughout the song, with Stefani saying ahead of the bridge, “Olivia Rodrigo, why do the good girls, like me and you, always want…”

“…the bad boys!” Rodrigo finished with a theatrical flourish. Stefani even called her fellow singer/songwriter over at the end of the song by calling, “Come here, my little Vampire!”

Olivia recently told Nylon about discovering Return to Saturn when she was 15, and spoke with them about her love for Gwen Stefani, writing, “Gwen’s ability to evolve and explore different styles of music, songwriting, and aesthetic while still remaining true to herself is incredibly inspiring. To me, she’s a prime example of an artist who defies stereotypes and preconceived boundaries and just makes stuff that she thinks is cool. If that’s not a true artist, I don’t know what is.”

“Gwen sang about being a woman moving about this world in detail that I had never before heard put to music,” Olivia continued to Nylon. “She unapologetically sings about things ranging from wanting to make out with someone to fantasizing about having a husband and kids. There’s so much heart in every word she says, and every song feels like it’s ripped from the diary of the coolest girl you know.”

In addition to beloved hits like “Just a Girl,” “Don’t Speak,” and “Spiderwebs,” which ended their set, and some deeper cuts (with Gwen telling bassist Tony Kanal, “Hey Tony, I was thinking we should dust off some of the old shit!” at one point), No Doubt covered the Prince Buster classic “One Step Beyond” (seemingly modeled after the popular Madness version) for the first time. See their full setlist below, and some video clips; you can also rewind the livestream to watch the whole set.

No word yet on whether No Doubt plan to continue their reunion beyond Coachella. Gwen, who has a few of her own festival dates lined up, told People back in January, “It just happened so fast, and that’s my favorite kind of thing to happen. We haven’t really figured out the next steps of how we’re going to do this, but we’re just all so excited.”

We caught the third night of Olivia Rodrigo’s four-show Madison Square Garden run last week.
